One type of scam that is becoming more prevalent involves tech support. According to Microsoft, the scam usually involves using malware to trick someone into calling a fake tech support number to resolve an issue on their computer.
You may have tech support scam malware on your computer if you can’t use your web browser properly and you see a page informing you to contact tech support as a specified number. In some cases, it may go beyond the browser and you may not be able to use your PC without receiving a similar message.
Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls or send unsolicited emails to request personal or financial information or to fix your computer. If you’re having issues, you should contact Microsoft or trusted professionals like those at Integrated.
According to Microsoft, this is what you should do if you’ve already engaged in the scam:
- Uninstall or turn off any remote management tools you may have installed or turned on.
- Use Windows Defender Antivirus or Windows Defender Offline to clean your PC and make sure Windows 10 is up to date.
- Apply all security updates as soon as they are available.
- Change your passwords.
- Call your credit card provider to try reversing the charges.
- Pay attention to any unusual activity on your PC.
- Consider restoring your PC to a previous state.
